Nurit Gur Lavy (Karni)

My immediate environment drives my art, in which the private, public and political are interwoven.

Over a 10 year period, I painted my father Karni as his Alzheimer's disease took hold. It was a project with personal elements but it also became a reflection of the complex political reality in which we live.  Afterwards, during the Second Intifada, I started painting aerial photography of the Karni Crossing , which is named after my father. Through them, I discovered aerial photographs of the nearby refugee camp Jabalia in the Gaza strip. I painted from these photographs in an attempt to look at the landscape of "the other", which became the series "Aerial Photography, Gaza".

The preoccupation with aerial photography led me to the aerial photographs of Route 6. Driving along the route towards the Gaza Envelope, I discovered gardens and artificial replanting of wild flowers along the route. I started painting local flowers with their Hebrew names, a series called Flora Palaestina. These works raise questions about the Zionist ethos that my parents generation was raised on.
